The Opportunity   

We are looking for an energetic and creative software engineer to join our AI applications team. You will gain firsthand experience in putting AI technologies into software products that help military commanders and business leaders make mission critical decisions. You will see and contribute to all parts of software development life cycle design, from design to delivery. The ideal candidate will be an individual with exceptional algorithmic, problem solving, and interpersonal skills, who will be able to hit the ground running. We will provide the necessary training and tools to help you produce world class software.  

Responsibilities 

    • Collaboratively design, implement, and test decision support and simulation software using cutting-edge technologies including AI and machine learning components 
    • Develop modular systems in a distributed architecture such as with RESTful containerized micro services 
    • Review and analyze software runtime performance, make algorithmic and performance improvements 
    • Use agile development techniques 

 Qualifications and Experience  

    • Degree in Computer Science or related field 
    • 3-5  years in software development including design, coding, and testing and delivery 
    • Mastery in object-oriented design and programming, knowledge of design patterns, and algorithmic analysis 
    • Proficient in Python and experience with Java, TypeScript, or C++ 
    • Experience with essential software development tools 
      • distributed version control such as Git 
      • build frameworks such as Gradle, Maven, or CMake 
      • unit test frameworks such as JUnit, or Python unittest 
    • Experience working in a small team environment, in a remote environment 

Bonus Experience  

    • Exposure to Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning technologies 
    • Experience with discrete event simulation 
    • Experience with geospatial and/or temporal databases 
    • Experience performing scientific evaluations, experimentation, and comparisons
    • Familiarity with technologies such as Docker, Node, Spring, Flask

The Opportunity
During your remote Skillbridge internship at Knexus, you will continue to serve the government by support our DoD clients; you will be essential in building revolutionary AI to solve some of the Navy’s toughest problems. 
 

A successful candidate will have a technical background and curiosity to learn more. They will have fundamental developing skills or understanding and be ready to learn more about the execution of AI and ML in their domain space. They will want to learn everything that goes into running a small business serving the government. You will help us translate all our technical applications into real world scenarios using your subject matter expertise in the following domains: 

  • Mine warfare,  
  • Unmanned systems (maritime or air),  
  • Logistics,  
  • Modeling & Simulation, and 
  • Mission planning 

You might be a good fit for the position if you have recently served at one of the following commands. This is not a requirement. 

  • Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) 
  • Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) 
  • Department Head tour as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO)

Location 

We are mostly remote and can support 100% remote work while you transition off Active Duty. Our clients and most of the team is on East Coast hours, so we need someone able to support normal working hours in Eastern Standard Time. Knexus has an office in National Harbor if you would like to work in person. After the internship is complete, the Washington DC Metro area (DMV) is preferred, but we are open to all qualified candidates. 

Responsibilities 

  • Liaison with End-Users: As someone who understands the language and needs of the end-users in the Navy, you will help bridge the gap between the technical team and the end-users. This will include, but isn’t limited to, attending client meetings, meeting with our technical team to answer application questions, and participating in regular stand-up meetings with the project teams. 
  • Domain Knowledge: You will bring a deep understanding of the operational environment, tactics, techniques, and procedures used in the domain of expertise. This knowledge is crucial in developing AI solutions that are practical and effective in real-world scenarios. 
  • Data Interpretation: You will interpret the data used to train AI models. You will help identify what data is relevant and how it should be labeled for machine learning. 
  • Solution Validation: You will play a key role in testing and validating AI solutions, ensuring that they perform as expected in simulated and real-world mine warfare scenarios. 
  • Ethical Considerations: Applicable domains have significant ethical considerations. You will be our expert in this area could guide the development of AI solutions to ensure they comply with international laws and ethical guidelines. 

Qualifications and Experience   

  • Degree in technical field such as, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Math, Physics, similar degree, or related experience. 
  • Exposure to Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning technologies with the desire to learn more. If you have any coding experience, that’s a big plus! 
  • Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) or Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) qualified (preferred) 

Eligibility Requirements 

  • Meet all DoD SkillBridge qualifications set forth in DODI 1322.29 
  • Served at least 180 days on active duty 
  • Are within 9 months of separation or retirement at the time you apply 
  • Have at least 130 days to dedicate to the internship 
  • Will receive an honorable discharge 
  • Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS 
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months 
  • Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship 

Applicants should be prepared to complete remote interviews.  We will also ask for academic transcripts (college/university and/or military training), professional references, and your last three FITREPS/EVALS.  

Salary Range upon the successful completion of the program: $80,000 – $150,000
